The nation’s older population is growing, requiring well-trained health care providers with expert knowledge and skill in geriatric health care. This activity emphasizes core competencies related to geriatric behavioral health care. A multidisciplinary approach will be demonstrated in presentations with audience participation. A wide range of topics will address common geriatric mental illnesses, as well as strategies for treatment, recovery and continuity of care.

The cost to attend is $30.

Target Audience:

This activity is intended for Nurses, Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors, and other professionals who provide care for older adult patients. Participants will earn 6 CEs. Oceans Behavioral Hospital is an approved provider for continuing education for Licensed Professional Counselors, Provider #2611.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of this educational initiative, participants should be able to:
• Apply to practice core competencies related to optimal geriatric behavioral healthcare including The Recovery Model in treatment planning and Non-Pharmacologic interventions for behavioral difficulties.
• List challenges faced by older adults in transition.
• Identify interventions to engage older adults during transitions.
• Explain the Recovery Based Care model with the use of hope without stigma and discrimination.
• Outline approach to improve the quality of care and outcomes in patients with behavioral health issues by the use of recovery-based care model.
• List the unique strengths of older adults in the participation of trauma informed care.
• Define Measurement Based Care (MBC) as it applies to its use in behavioral healthcare.
• Identify two patient specific uses of measurement-based care.
• Prepare a process for implementation of measurement-based care in your practice setting.
• Examine the impact of trauma and disease and non-disease states common in older adults (e.g., dementia).

Dr. James Butler, MD, PhD, Regional Medical Director, ensures Oceans Healthcare remains at the forefront of the behavioral health care. He has more than a decade of experience in genetic research and behavioral health and holds doctorate degrees from University of Kentucky College of Medicine. He completed research fellowships at Harvard University and UT Southwestern Medical Center.

Charla Anderson, BSN, RN-PMHNC, Regional Director of Clinical Operations, has almost three decades of nursing and clinical operational leadership expertise with extensive knowledge of case management, hospital administration, medical/surgical services and mental health treatment. She earned her nursing degree from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Sherry Bustin, M.A., VP of Regional Operations, has managed multiple senior behavioral health treatment facilities in Texas and Oklahoma. She holds a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Amberton University. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, Sherry worked primarily with adults in private practice and inpatient care before moving to administration.

Cindy Plata, LCSW, Director of Intensive Outpatient Services, Oceans Behavioral Hospital Longview, leads and supervises individual and group therapies for adult and geriatric patients. She specializes in providing crisis intervention services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and dual diagnoses. Plata holds a master’s degree in social work from Stephen F. Austin State University.

Melynda Boothe, MA CCC/SLP, MBA, CPHQ, EVP Process Improvement and Outcomes, leads Oceans Healthcare’s efforts to standardize, integrate and improve processes related to patient care and safety. She began her career in speech language pathology before moving to clinical leadership. She earned master’s degrees from Louisiana State University and the University of Louisiana.
