Approximately 15 Percent of adults age 60 and over suffer from a mental disorder
Oceans Healthcare, a behavioral health provider focused on the healing and long-term recovery of older adults and seniors, recognizes Metal Illness Awareness Week Oct. 4 - 10. This week focuses on supporting those experiencing mental illness, educating the public, advocating for equal care and fighting for this year’s theme, to be StigmaFree.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, one in five adults experience mental illness problems every year. Only 41 percent of adults in the U.S. with a mental health condition, however, received mental health services.
Lack of access to mental health services extends to older adults and seniors as the baby boomer generation ages. According to the World Health Organization, the number of persons age 60 or over is expected to more than triple by 2100. It is estimated 15 percent of adults 60 and over suffer from a mental disorder.
The Oceans team of psychiatrists, medical physicians and caregivers understands the stigma that surrounds mental illness can often make people reluctant to seek help. The hospital team strives to destigmatize behavioral health and believes firmly that patients must be seen as an individual, not a diagnosis. Oceans is committed to providing high-quality care, educating community members and supporting patients and their families.
