Hospital to expand services for young adults in larger, state-of-the-art facility

LAKE CHARLES, La. – (March 8, 2016) – Oceans Behavioral Hospital Lake Charles announced it will expand its services to reach young adults 18 and older and will soon move into a newly renovated, larger facility. The new hospital will continue treating adults and seniors 55 and older, as well as offering an intensive outpatient program for patients living at home or in an assisted living facility.

Located at 4250 5th Ave., the newly renovated, 29,000 square-foot facility will begin accepting patients in late March. The facility will provide twice as many inpatient beds as the hospital’s current building, including 20 beds for adults 18 and older who require extra care and inpatient hospitalization and 20 beds for patients 55 and older in a safe and comfortable environment. For safety and security, younger adults and geriatric patients will be treated on two different units within the hospital.

Louisiana ranks 47th nationwide for mental healthcare, meaning the state has a high prevalence of mental illness and scarce access to care, according to the 2015 Mental Health America report. The city of Lake Charles alone is expecting 22,000 new residents by 2019, indicating the demand for treatment services will continue to grow.

“The combination of a lack of behavioral health services and an ever-increasing number of new residents in our city means our hospital needed to grow to meet our community’s needs,” said Bill Willis, hospital administrator at Oceans Behavioral Hospital Lake Charles. “Behavioral health is an often misunderstood illness, and we hope that by expanding our services we are able to reach more people, educate our community and encourage others to seek help.”

In the outpatient program, the hospital’s team of expert clinicians will provide ongoing treatment for a wide variety of behavioral health issues. The goal of the program is to prevent hospitalization by providing intense therapy while patients remain integrated in their communities. The program also assists patients transitioning from a recent inpatient hospitalization back into the community.

Oceans Behavioral Hospital Lake Charles provides high-quality, personalized and safe care to patients who may be experiencing mood and behavior disturbances or progressive, degenerative mental illnesses.

Unlike many behavioral health providers, the hospital places extreme importance on addressing medical conditions that may be directly or indirectly related to behavioral health needs. In addition to receiving care from four on-site board certified or board-eligible psychiatrists, patients are closely monitored by medical physicians to ensure overall health and well-being and to address any general medical issues.
