New hospital will provide inpatient mental health treatment options

AMARILLO, Texas (Sept. 28, 2020) –Plano-based Oceans Healthcare today announced the expansion of its Texas behavioral health services with a new inpatient psychiatric hospital in Amarillo. Located at 7501 Wallace Blvd., Oceans Behavioral Hospital Amarillo will treat patients 50 and older.

“We seek out expansion in communities that struggle with access to care and have long considered the addition of a new location in the Texas Panhandle,” said Stuart Archer, CEO of Oceans Healthcare. “Under the pressures of the COVID-19 outbreak and facing increasing rates of depression and suicide, now more than ever we need to make it easier for individuals to seek care. We look forward to expanding access to behavioral health treatment specifically for older adults in north Texas.”

“Amarillo welcomes Oceans Healthcare as a new business in our community and we appreciate the services it will bring to Panhandle residents in need of mental health care,” said Amarillo Mayor Ginger Nelson.

Oceans Behavioral Hospital Amarillo will provide inpatient and intensive outpatient services including individual and group therapies, medication management, mental health education and co-occurring health issues, under the supervision of board-certified or board-eligible psychiatrists. The hospital, collocated within Vibra Hospital, will treat older adults and seniors, a population often overlooked in the behavioral health care continuum.

"As a behavioral health provider, we at Texas Panhandle Centers know firsthand how critical access to mental health care is to a large rural region such as ours,” said Mellisa Talley, Executive Director of Texas Panhandle Centers, an organization serving over 7,000 individuals and families with severe mental illness intellectual and developmental disabilities each year . “I welcome Oceans Behavioral Healthcare to our community and look forward to a strong and lasting partnership."

Mental and behavioral health care access concerns are among the top three health issues facing seniors in the Amarillo community, according to the 2018 Community Health Assessment. In 2018 the city experienced a 17% increase in individuals indicating they had sought out mental health services.   The Panhandle Behavioral Health Alliance sees expanding mental health care as a key initiative for the future of mental health care expansion.

Founded in 2004, Oceans Healthcare has grown to a network of 18 behavioral health hospitals across the southeast. The company most recently opened hospitals in Waco, Texas, and Hammond, Louisiana. Oceans Behavioral Hospital Amarillo will be the company’s 8th hospital in Texas. Other locations in the state include Abilene, Katy, Longview, Lufkin, Midland, Pasadena and Waco.

Last year the company expanded services at nearly half of its locations with the development of new programming for active duty and veteran military members, adolescents and patients managing substance use disorders.
