Oceans Healthcare EVP, General Counsel named 2019 Corporate Counsel Awards finalist by D CEO

Aug 7th, 2019

PLANO, Texas (August 7, 2019) – Laura Tarantino, executive vice president and general counsel for Oceans Healthcare, has been named a 2019 Corporate Counsel Awards finalist by D CEO magazine. The award honors top in-house attorneys in the North Texas area for legal work on behalf of their organizations.

Tarantino joined Oceans Healthcare in 2014. Since that time, she has shepherded Oceans through an explosive period of growth, most recently acquiring two hospitals in roughly six months and expanding specialized inpatient and outpatient behavioral health service lines to create additional access for underserved populations.

“While I am honored to receive this recognition and appreciate the chance to increase awareness of the need for behavioral health care in our communities, this award represents a team effort,” Tarantino said. “Oceans’ growth and expansion efforts this year are the result of many hours of hard work by multiple people across three states, and I am grateful for their support and dedication to our company and our mission.”

Tarantino is passionate about expanding access to behavioral health care throughout Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas, the states in which Oceans Healthcare operates. Earlier this year, Tarantino and a team from Oceans worked with Mississippi Governor Phil Bryan to prioritize mental health care access in the state. The Mississippi legislature passed a bill in April authorizing the Division of Medicaid to reimburse for services provided to beneficiaries by licensed freestanding psychiatric hospitals, including Oceans Behavioral Hospital of Biloxi.

Previously, such services would not have been covered due to a long-standing federal provision known as the Institutions for Mental Disease or “IMD” exclusion. This exclusion often kept individuals in emergency rooms and jails, ultimately delaying much-needed care for those in acute crisis and creating a financial burden for state and local communities.

Tarantino also serves as the president of the Louisiana Association for Behavioral Health and advocates with other local organizations to raise public awareness for mental health care access for all individuals.

“Laura is a fixture on our leadership team, and I am proud to call her both colleague and friend,” said CEO Stuart Archer. “She leads by example and truly embodies the Oceans Healthcare core convictions of treating everyone with dignity, compassion and respect. Her passionate efforts to provide much-needed mental health care to vulnerable members of our society help ensure individuals in the communities Oceans serves received the help and treatment they deserve.”

Finalists will be honored at a special event held by D CEO in September. For more information on the 2019 Corporate Counsel Awards program, visit D CEO.
