STARSM program offers specialized mental health treatment for active duty military, veterans and families
PLANO, Texas (Dec. 6, 2018) – The rate at which military members experience major depression is five times higher than that of their civilian counterparts. Military members experience higher rates of several mental health challenges, including post-traumatic stress and substance use disorders.
Despite the statistics, seeking behavioral health treatment is often difficult for servicemembers due to lack of access and negative stigma.
In an effort to increase access for servicemembers across the country, Oceans Healthcare today announced the launch of its national mental health treatment program specifically designed for active duty military, veterans and their families. The STARSM program, which stands for Support Through Active Recovery, provides inpatient and intensive outpatient programs to treat combat-related and other behavioral health disorders and substance use with co-occurring behavioral conditions.
The program accepts patients from across the country at Oceans Behavioral Hospital Abilene, with a future program site planned for Oceans Behavioral Hospital Lake Charles. Other Oceans Behavioral Hospital facilities plan to adopt the program in the near future.
“Active duty military and veterans can face a unique set of behavioral health challenges that result from their experience in the service,” said Stuart Archer, CEO of Oceans Healthcare. “We are honored to provide our nation’s heroes with specialized behavioral health support, resources and communications tools to achieve ongoing recovery.”
The STARSM program addresses the needs of servicemembers who have served during peacetime service or modern wars such as operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation New Dawn. Seniors, including Korean- and Vietnam-era veterans, attend separate programs with peers while their service-related issues are addressed individually.
The highly structured program is driven by clinical programming developed by physicians and specialists familiar with military life. Physician-led treatment teams are trained in evidence-based psychotherapies, including clinical practice guidelines recommended by the Department of Defense and Veteran’s Administration.
STARSM provides a familiar, structured environment for patients, including a dedicated military liaison to provide a seamless transition and program schedules that adhere to military time. All program team members undergo military culture training prior to interacting with servicemembers.
Oceans military liaisons will work with local base personnel to determine transportation and lodging needs that best meet the needs of the patient. The program accepts TRICARE, VA CHOICE, Medicare and most other insurance plans.
