LAKE CHARLES, La. – (July 6, 2017) – Oceans Behavioral Hospital of Lake Charles today opened a specialized inpatient campus located at 302 McNeese Street solely dedicated to the unique needs of older adults and seniors suffering from mental illness. Oceans’ recently-renovated main location was opened last year at 4250 5th Avenue and has now increased access for younger adults needing inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care.
“Access to high-quality mental health services for young adults, aging adults and seniors in Southwest Louisiana continues to be a pressing issue. The Oceans family is proud and humbled to be able to take a leadership role in serving the unique needs of these distinct populations by creating separate, safe environments specially designed for their individualized treatment,” said Stuart Archer, Oceans Healthcare CEO.
Oceans Lake Charles’ new dedicated inpatient campus for older adults and seniors is staffed by board-certified geriatric psychiatrists, nurse practitioners and specialty-trained clinicians. Additional therapy services include counselor-led support groups, individual and family counseling, medication management and education.
“At Oceans, we’re making every effort to increase access to inpatient and outpatient behavioral healthcare, encourage earlier intervention, and promote community awareness and education,” said Rachel King, administrator, Oceans Lake Charles. “Our goal is to ensure every adult and senior community member, loved one, friend and neighbor in need has local access to these services.”
In the last six months, Oceans Healthcare has expanded access regionally with the opening of an inpatient facility in Crowley and two intensive outpatient programs in Southeastern and Southwestern Louisiana. In total, Oceans provides 248 inpatient beds and nine intensive outpatient programs in Louisiana. Last year, the healthcare system treated more than 5,600 individuals statewide.
“Here in Southwest Louisiana, we’re proud to consider Oceans as a partner as we work to build strength in our community and provide hope to those experiencing mental illness,” said Tanya McGee, executive director for Imperial Calcasieu Human Services Authority, the organization responsible for administration, management and operations of behavioral health and developmental disabilities services to the citizens of Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jeff-Davis parishes.
Louisiana ranks 42nd nationwide for mental healthcare, meaning the state has a high prevalence of mental illness and scarce access to care according to the 2017 Mental Health America report. About 122,000 adults, or almost four percent, per year from 2009–2013, had serious mental illness according to a recent report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. And 10.5 percent of Louisiana seniors age 65 and older reported their mental health was not good for at least two weeks or more out of the preceding 30 day period according to the most recent America’s Health Rankings Senior Report.
Oceans Behavioral Hospital Lake Charles provides high-quality, personalized and safe care to patients who may be experiencing mood and behavior disturbances, behavioral side effects associated with Alzheimer’s or dementia, or progressive, degenerative mental illnesses. Unlike many behavioral health providers, the hospital places extreme importance on addressing medical conditions that may be directly or indirectly related to behavioral health needs. In addition to receiving care from on-site board certified psychiatrists, patients are closely monitored by medical physicians to ensure overall health and well-being and to address any general medical issues.
