Holidays are supposed to be a time of joy, but can trigger depression for many.
Oceans Behavioral Healthcare, a behavioral health provider focused on the healing and long-term recovery of older adults and seniors, recognizes holiday depression is a serious problem that affects many Americans every year.
The holiday season is supposed to be a time of joy but if you’re already suffering from depression, the holidays can exacerbate the problem.
Depression is more common than AIDS, cancer and diabetes combined, and nearly 400,000 people attempt suicide in the U.S. every year. However, it’s a common misconception that the suicide rate spikes during the holidays; suicides are actually lowest in December and peak in the spring.
If you’re feeling seasonal blues, often due to financial stress, being away from loved ones or lack of time, it’s easy to feel out-of-sync with the holiday cheer. A few symptoms include headaches, excessive drinking, overeating, decreased interest in activities once found enjoyable and insomnia or excessive sleeping.
Nine Tips to Avoid Holiday Depression:
The Oceans team of psychiatrists, medical physicians and caregivers strives to act as a support for patients and family members during this season.
If you notice any warning signs in yourself or someone you know, schedule an appointment with your doctor.
